My family lived in New Orleans a few generations removed, long lost cousins. Needless to say as a family we did well. We integrated well into the schools system although with some growing pains. Our parents opened two Haitian Art stores, one on Decatur and on (of all places), Bourbon Street! I spent a lot of nights on Bourbon and the things I saw…and as is the case with the USA, opportunity abounds…my Dad, Yves Laborde became the director of international trade and relations for the City of New Orleans.

All this to show that NOLA and Haiti truly are two sides of the same coin. Our war of independence against the French that led to the Louisiana purchase– allowing for the U.S. to double its landmass west of the Mississippi. Our First Diaspora came to NOLA before the revolution and “en masse” after; doubling the population of the City of New Orleans. Artisans, Masons and Teachers, Freemen of Color planting their stock in Louisiana, or as said in those days La Louisiane. From Jean Paul Audubon to Marie Lavaud. All you have to do is scratch the surface and you’ll find pieces of Haiti. It is no wonder that my family and countless others who made their way from Haiti to NOLA have met success on this journey to their home away from home.

This initiative has been titled Twin Sister Reunited (TSR) for a reason, within this appellation you find the definitive expression of the rich historical ties and the vast wealth of culture shared that bind these two places all the way back from their foundation. I want to take this occasion to thank and salute the Leadership and Vision of the Honorable Mayor of Cape Haitian, Mme Yvrose Pierre and the Honorable Mayor of the City of New Orleans, Mrs. Latoya Cantrell. They are the force that has driven the initiative towards the formation of the TSR Advisory Board and Executive Committee ensuring the promise for tangible and mutual impactful benefits of development for both Cities. I also want to express my utmost appreciation to the Founders, the Board of Directors and the members of the Haiti New Orleans Heritage Task Force (HNOTF) for all of its work over the last decade and foreseeable future, always fulfilling the role and function of facilitator of development between Haiti and New Orleans, Louisiana and the United States.
